Create Walkways

We often consider administrative roles solo acts, with one person directly managing another. This can lead to burnout, with that person feeling the weight of sole ownership and unable to take breaks or delegate when absent. This is where walkways come into play.

As Jamie Vanek details in her book "Buried in Business," walkways are the communication and priority alignment that happens between administrators and adjacent teams:

"Your admin should always feel comfortable taking time off when needed and not have the stress of returning to a mess. Whether A-players can band together, this should be a temporary situation and is not intended to be sustainable or replace your missing A-player. If this feels threatening to your admin, it’s time to reinspect their house. If having connections to other admin roles weakens the villa, then there are likely cracks in the foundation. Walkways should only strengthen a village."

At The Productive Co., we create walkways by working in a team of two for the price of one. Think of our owner Lindsay as your remote Chief of Staff. Lindsay & your Virtual Assistant work together, acting as pillars of support so you can achieve your goals. This way, no ball gets dropped and project priorities are always aligned.
